What is the Heart of Camden?

The Heart of Camden (HOC) is a multi-faceted community developer that uses affordable high-quality housing platforms to rebuild neighborhoods. Our development philosophy believes in nourishing both body and soul. The people and the place. These are the keys to building successful and sustainable communities. Neighborhoods to call home.

Started in 1984 by our founder, Msgr. Michael Doyle, of Sacred Heart Church, the Heart of Camden’s mission is to restore dignity and quality of life through programs of housing restoration, economic expansion, and human development. We believe families thrive in neighborhoods with core community assets and strong family supports.

Today, HOC is proud to be a part of the transformation of the Waterfront South neighborhood of Camden City. The neighborhood that we call home. This historic village was settled in 1851 and once housed large shipbuilding and other industries. The neighborhood, like many inner-city communities, suffered steep decline as families moved to the suburbs, industrialization plummeted and social unrest took hold. Despite these challenges, Fr. Michael Doyle saw the promise and beauty of Waterfront South and set about supporting its revitalization.

The Heart of Camden Housing Program:
Since its inception, the HOC has built and rehabilitated homes for over 350 Waterfront South families, developed a flourishing arts community; cultural district, and collaborated with partners on cleaning and greening the neighborhood by building new play spaces and providing access to the beautiful Delaware River waterfront. The Heart of Camden’s unique model engages residents, community leaders, and volunteers to add resources, create and implement neighborhood programs, offer valuable insights, and support children and families.

The Heart of Camden has successfully completed the following community redevelopment activities:
  • Rehabilitated and Sold over 350 Single Family Homes to Low and moderate-income families
  • Developed the Camden Fireworks Arts Studio
  • Developed the Camden Maritime Museum
  • Developed the Nick Virgilio Writers House
  • Completed the Michael J Doyle Field House- Community Gym
  • Completed the New Offices of the Heart of Camden
  • Developed the Hynes Community Center
  • Organized the Waterfront South Community and completed the Waterfront South Neighborhood Plan
  • Developed Open Space Projects and Pocket Parks
  • Community Arts Mural Projects
  • Completed the Broadway Streetscapes Infrastructure Projects
Thanks to the HOC’s hard work Waterfront South is truly a thriving community and a great place to call home! Come home—it’s where the HEART is!

In an ever changing world, we strive for revitalization because we believe that there is enough money in America, even in a bad economy, that no one needs to live in blight, and supporting the poor, because there have always been poor people needing special support.

We strive to improve the quality of life in a struggling neighborhood. When situations get complicated (politically, land use), we make our decisions on what is best for the already overburdened children of the neighborhood.

My name is Fr. Michael Doyle and I am the Monsignor here at Sacred Heart Church.

Since 1959 I have been given the incredible opportunity to experience both the Good and the Bad that has surrounded Camden over the years.

Through my experiences I can tell you for sure that if there’s a struggle, then excellence is possible—and victory is possible!

Now more than ever the need to support the families of the City of Camden is needed. Your Help is needed.

Any & All support you can offer is greatly appreciated!
